Stupid Product Feature
Yakima has come out with a new kayak rack. The Bow Down. Not a bad looking rack. I like the fact that it folds down flat when not in use. But was it really necessary to include a bottle opener in a kayak rack. Come on, were paddlers really screaming over the lack of a bottle opener on their kayak rack. Maybe we need to open a beer before a launch. Nothing says have a safe paddling trip like downing a beer before you leave. Okay I know there are other bottled beverages besides beer that one may need a bottle opener for, but this just seems stupid to me.

I bought a new bike rack for my Jeep last month, I noticed the Yakima bike rack had a bottle opener. Now the Thule rack also comes with a bottle opener, it’s on the tool used to tighten the rack to the vehicle. You don’t have to stop the car and get out to open your beer.

I have to admit - there have been times when I could have put this to good use. Most of our bottles will be opened in the parking lot after a good paddle, but every now and then we will find ourselves in need of an opener (or a corkscrew) while out on the water. I’m thinking of mounting one on my norsaq.

I love the Norsaq bottle opener idea. May Swiss Army Knife company can make a boy scout version that has everything built into your Norsaq that folds out.

You know, I’d be suprised if DaveO doesn’t have something like that already. Has James Bond ever been kayaking? I’d love to see some of the gizmos that Q could cook up.

A beer opener stupid!!?? I once purchased a ‘64 Chevy over a Ford because the door latch worked as a beer bottle opener. I suppose if a guy drank cans of Pabst or Miller Lite with twist off caps you might not care about an opener but in a case like that you’d likely not be kayaking with me……
I think it shows initiative, innovation, and a lack of pc sensibilities on the part of Yakima; all qualities that I admire.

Well, it would go perfectly with those kayaks that have a built in drink holder…
